With some of the most colourful, vibrant, eclectic costumes and sets, the way this show is shot really helps transport viewers back to the late 1940’s studio system era.
Taking liberties with the ‘truth’, the show reimagines the day to day lives of some of Hollywood’s most iconic stars from the “Golden Age” by exploring their rise to fame and the structuralised sexism, racism and cronyism that infected studios across the country through the Hayes code.
The main protagonist is Jack Costello, a World War 2 veteran returning to the states to few career prospects and very little fanfare. He sets about becoming an actor much to the disapproval of his long suffering wife and makes some questionable decisions as he shoots for fame and fortune.
Interesting concept if a little too predictable and hammy but a really good performance by Jim Parsons (Sheldon from Big Bang Theory) as an unscrupulous and manipulative agent to the stars.
Mindless entertainment and escapism that you can watch without having to think.
